Where is Transylvania located?

Transylvania is located in central Romania, in the heart of the Carpathian region of Central Europe.

It is a historical and cultural region rather than a separate modern country or Romanian administrative unit. The Carpathian Mountains form much of its eastern and southern landscape, while the Apuseni Mountains lie to the west. Major cities associated with Transylvania include Cluj-Napoca, Brașov, Sibiu, Sighișoara, and Târgu Mureș.

The region has a layered history shaped by Dacian, Roman, Hungarian, Saxon, Romanian, Ottoman, and Habsburg influences. Its name comes from medieval Latin and is commonly interpreted as meaning “land beyond the forest.” Transylvania became part of the Kingdom of Romania after the 1918 Great Union, a change confirmed internationally by post–World War I treaties.

Halloween often brings Transylvania together with Count Dracula, but the historical geography is more complicated. Bram Stoker’s Dracula is fictional, and the novel never precisely identifies the castle as Bran Castle. Vlad the Impaler, one inspiration for Dracula, was a ruler of Wallachia, a different historical region, although his reputation is strongly connected with modern Transylvania tourism.
