Where is the speedometer located in a classic Mini?

The story behind the answer

In a classic Mini, the speedometer is located in the center of the dashboard. This large, centrally mounted instrument is one of the car’s most recognizable interior features, positioned where both front occupants could see it rather than directly in front of the driver.

The arrangement was part of the Mini’s unusually efficient packaging. Issigonis’s design kept the dashboard narrow and simple, while the central instrument binnacle left useful space on either side. Early Minis paired the speedometer with other basic gauges, including fuel and temperature information, depending on model and year.

Drivers accustomed to conventional cars often expect the speedometer behind the steering wheel, but that location held fewer or different instruments in many classic Minis. The central speedometer later became a signature styling cue for the modern BMW-era MINI, although newer cars use a much larger, more sophisticated instrument and infotainment assembly.
