Where is "The Polar Express" going?

In “The Polar Express,” the magical train is going to the North Pole. It arrives there on Christmas Eve, carrying children who hope to meet Santa Claus and witness the beginning of Christmas.

The story originated as Chris Van Allsburg’s 1985 picture book. A young boy who is beginning to doubt Santa hears a train outside his home and boards it after the conductor invites him aboard. The journey takes the children through forests, mountains, and wintry landscapes before reaching the North Pole.

At the destination, Santa chooses the boy to receive the first gift of Christmas. He asks for a bell from Santa’s sleigh, but it falls through a hole in his pocket during the return journey. The bell later reappears beneath the Christmas tree, reinforcing the story’s main theme: belief is something the boy can hear even when others cannot. The 2004 film adaptation follows the same central destination and plot.
