On November 13, 1974, Ronald DeFeo Jr. shot and killed six members of his family inside their home at 112 Ocean Avenue in Amityville, a village on Long Island. DeFeo was later convicted on six counts of second-degree murder. The crime became the factual starting point for the much more famous haunting story.
In December 1975, George and Kathy Lutz moved into the house with their three children. They claimed that they experienced frightening paranormal events and left after 28 days. Their account became the basis for Jay Anson’s 1977 book The Amityville Horror and later films.
The murders are documented criminal history, while the Lutz family’s supernatural claims remain highly disputed. The original house still stands, although its address and exterior have been changed to discourage tourists and unwanted attention.
