Where is the band Ben Folds Five from?

Ben Folds Five is from North Carolina, having formed in Chapel Hill in the early 1990s. The alternative-rock trio consisted of pianist and vocalist Ben Folds, bassist Robert Sledge, and drummer Darren Jessee.

Although the band's name suggests five members, Ben Folds Five was deliberately a three-person group. The name was chosen as a joke because Folds thought “Ben Folds Three” sounded less memorable. Their piano-led sound helped distinguish them from the guitar-heavy alternative rock common at the time.

The band became nationally known through its 1995 self-titled debut and the 1997 album Whatever and Ever Amen. Its best-known song, “Brick,” received substantial radio play. Ben Folds Five later released The Unauthorized Biography of Reinhold Messner in 1999, broke up in 2000, reunited for a period beginning in 2011, and issued The Sound of the Life of the Mind in 2012. Chapel Hill, rather than North Carolina's larger cities, is the most specific origin.
