Where in California is the Wente Winery located?

The story behind the answer

Wente Winery is located in Livermore, California. Its vineyards and winery are part of the Livermore Valley, an inland wine-growing region east of San Francisco Bay.

The Wente family established its wine business in 1883, when German immigrant C. H. Wente purchased land in the Livermore Valley. The winery is especially associated with Chardonnay: cuttings from Wente vineyards helped establish California's modern Chardonnay industry, and many vineyards planted with those descendants are known as “Wente clone” Chardonnay.

Livermore Valley is one of California's historic wine regions and has a distinctive east-west orientation that allows cool marine air to move inland from the bay. That cooling influence helps moderate warm daytime temperatures and supports grape growing.

A common mix-up is confusing Wente with wineries in Napa or Sonoma. Wente is in Alameda County, near the city of Livermore, and remains one of the country's oldest continuously family-operated wineries.
