Where does the Royal Family sit while attending Wimbledon events?

The story behind the answer

The Royal Family sits in the Royal Box while attending Wimbledon events. The box is a designated seating area on the south side of Centre Court at the All England Lawn Tennis and Croquet Club in Wimbledon, London.

The tradition has royal roots dating to 1907, when King George V attended the championships at Wimbledon’s former Worple Road venue. The present Centre Court opened at the club’s new site in 1922, and the Royal Box has been part of the tournament’s ceremonial character ever since. It was rebuilt in 2002.

The name can cause a common misunderstanding: the Royal Box is not reserved exclusively for monarchs or close royal relatives. Wimbledon invites a broader group of guests, including members of British and overseas royal families, tennis figures, public officials, armed-forces representatives and other distinguished guests.

Players once bowed or curtsied toward the Royal Box when entering or leaving Centre Court. That general custom ended in 2003, although a bow or curtsy may still be expected when the monarch or the Prince of Wales is present.
