Where does Bilbo Baggins live in J.R.R. Tolkien’s The Hobbit?

The story behind the answer

Bilbo Baggins lives in Hobbiton in J.R.R. Tolkien’s The Hobbit.

Hobbiton is a village in the Shire, the rural homeland of the Hobbits. Bilbo’s home is a comfortable underground dwelling at Bag End, located at the end of a lane on a hill. The setting establishes the peaceful, domestic life that Bilbo leaves when Gandalf and the Dwarves arrive to recruit him for their journey.

Hobbiton also becomes important in The Lord of the Rings. Frodo Baggins inherits Bag End from Bilbo, and the story begins there before Frodo sets out with the Ring. Samwise Gamgee and other familiar Hobbits also come from the surrounding Shire community.

Hobbiton is not the name of Bilbo’s house; Bag End is the house, while Hobbiton is the village. Michel Delving is the chief town of the Shire, and Bree is a separate settlement east of the Shire. These locations are close in the wider story but are not interchangeable.
