Where did yoga originate?

The story behind the answer

Yoga originated in India, where its earliest traditions developed as spiritual, philosophical, and meditative practices.

The word and related ideas appear in ancient Indian texts, including the Upanishads, while systematic yoga concepts emerged during the first millennium BCE. Early yoga was closely connected with Hindu, Buddhist, and Jain traditions and focused on disciplines such as meditation, breath control, ascetic practice, and liberation from suffering.

Patañjali’s Yoga Sutras, compiled in the early centuries of the Common Era, became one of the most influential works in the classical yoga tradition. Its eight-limbed path includes ethical behavior, concentration, meditation, and mental absorption; physical postures were only one part of the system.

Modern yoga spread internationally through Indian teachers and reformers, especially during the late nineteenth and twentieth centuries. Many contemporary classes emphasize exercise and flexibility, but that fitness-focused form represents only one modern adaptation of a much older Indian tradition.
