Where did the Second Continental Congress adopt the Declaration of Independence in 1776?
Answer
Independence Hall
Answer
Independence Hall
The Second Continental Congress adopted the Declaration of Independence at Independence Hall in Philadelphia in 1776.
The building was then known as the Pennsylvania State House. It served as the meeting place of the Second Continental Congress, which debated independence and approved the Declaration on July 4.
Independence Hall acquired its present name later, after the building became closely associated with the founding of the United States. It is part of Independence National Historical Park and is recognized as a major American historic site.
The building is sometimes confused with nearby Carpenters’ Hall, where the First Continental Congress met in 1774. Federal Hall in New York City is another important early U.S. political site, but it was not the location where Congress adopted the Declaration.
