Where did the principal signing of the United States Declaration of Independence take place?

The story behind the answer

The principal signing of the United States Declaration of Independence took place at Independence Hall in Philadelphia.

In 1776, the building was known as the Pennsylvania State House. It housed the Second Continental Congress, which debated independence and approved the Declaration. The building was later renamed Independence Hall because of its association with the Declaration and the Constitution.

Most historians conclude that most delegates signed the engrossed parchment on August 2, 1776. Some delegates were absent and added their names later, so the signing was not the single dramatic event often shown in popular paintings.

The same building hosted the Constitutional Convention in 1787. That connection makes Independence Hall especially important in American history: it is linked both to the announcement of independence and to the creation of the United States Constitution.
