Answer
Under the front bonnet
The original Volkswagen Beetle provided luggage storage under the front bonnet.
That layout was a direct consequence of the Beetle’s rear-mounted, air-cooled, horizontally opposed engine. With the engine and related mechanical components at the back, the space beneath the front hood could serve as a luggage compartment. A second storage area was located behind the rear seat.
This arrangement is an easy source of confusion because many modern cars place their engines under the front hood. The original Beetle did the opposite: its front compartment held luggage, while its rear compartment housed the engine. The Beetle’s rear-engine, rear-wheel-drive configuration also helped give it useful traction on slippery surfaces.
The later Volkswagen New Beetle changed the formula substantially. It moved the engine to the front and used front-wheel drive, leaving its luggage space at the rear. Thus, “front luggage compartment” identifies the original Type 1 Beetle, not the newer model that borrowed its styling.
