Where did the governor general host early Dominion Day parties?
Answer
Rideau Hall
Answer
Rideau Hall
The governor general hosted early Dominion Day parties at Rideau Hall.
Rideau Hall, in Ottawa, has served as the official residence and workplace of Canada’s governor general since Confederation. Early Dominion Day observances were not yet the large, centrally organized national celebrations familiar today. Instead, communities arranged local festivities, while the governor general hosted an official party at Rideau Hall.
The residence was acquired for the Crown in the 1860s and became the home of Viscount Monck, Canada’s first governor general. Rideau Hall’s grounds and reception rooms have since been used for ceremonies, diplomatic events, public celebrations, and visits by members of the royal family.
This answer is easy to confuse with 24 Sussex Drive, which is the prime minister’s official residence, or Parliament Hill, the seat of the federal legislature. The Citadelle of Quebec is also a major official residence, but it is associated with the governor general’s Quebec residence rather than the early Dominion Day parties described in accounts of Canada’s first national celebrations.
