Where did McDonald’s first Golden Arches restaurant open in 1953?

The story behind the answer

McDonald’s first restaurant featuring the Golden Arches opened in Phoenix, Arizona, in 1953.

The arches were designed by architect Stanley Clark Meston for McDonald’s restaurant buildings. The original concept used two separate yellow arches positioned at opposite ends of the building. They were intended to make the restaurant visible to passing motorists and to give the building a distinctive roadside identity.

The Phoenix restaurant helped establish the arches as a recognizable McDonald’s visual feature before they became the company’s central logo. A common mix-up is San Bernardino, California, which was the location of the McDonald brothers’ original restaurant, opened before the Phoenix design. Des Plaines, Illinois, was the site of Ray Kroc’s first McDonald’s franchise restaurant.

The arches later became the basis of the familiar golden “M” logo, turning an architectural feature into one of the world’s best-known corporate symbols.
