Where did Georgia O'Keeffe spend the final years of her life?
Answer
Santa Fe
Answer
Santa Fe
Georgia O'Keeffe spent the final years of her life in Santa Fe, New Mexico. She died there on March 6, 1986, at the age of 98.
O'Keeffe moved permanently to New Mexico in 1949 after years of visiting and working in the region. She maintained important connections with Ghost Ranch and Abiquiú, but Santa Fe became the setting for her later life and the location of her death.
Her final years included declining eyesight, which limited her ability to paint. She continued to work with assistants and explored other forms of artistic making. Her legacy remained active through exhibitions, publications, and the preservation of her homes and studios.
Santa Fe is also home to the Georgia O'Keeffe Museum, which opened in 1997, more than a decade after her death. That museum should not be confused with the Georgia O'Keeffe Museum Research Center or with the artist's former homes in Abiquiú and Ghost Ranch.
