Answer
Santa Fe, New Mexico
Georgia O'Keeffe died in Santa Fe, New Mexico, in 1986.
O'Keeffe had a long association with New Mexico, first visiting the state in 1917 and returning regularly from the late 1920s. Its desert landscapes, adobe buildings, bones, flowers, and mountains became central subjects in her art. She eventually made New Mexico her permanent home.
O'Keeffe died on March 6, 1986, at age 98, in Santa Fe. Her ashes were scattered over Cerro Pedernal, a mountain she repeatedly painted. That mountain is sometimes confused with her residences, but it was not the place where she died.
Santa Fe later became closely connected with her legacy. The Georgia O'Keeffe Museum opened there in 1997, more than a decade after her death, and holds a major collection of her paintings, drawings, and personal materials.
