Where did Fitzgerald complete a rough draft of The Great Gatsby in 1924?

The story behind the answer

Fitzgerald completed a rough draft of The Great Gatsby on the French Riviera in 1924.

Fitzgerald began developing the novel in 1923, but the project changed substantially as he revised its setting, narrator, and characters. After living on Long Island, he and Zelda Fitzgerald moved with their daughter to the French Riviera in 1924. There, he completed a rough draft of the manuscript before sending it to his editor, Maxwell Perkins.

The draft was not the final book. Perkins encouraged further revision, and Fitzgerald continued refining the manuscript through the following winter. He reconsidered the title, sharpened Nick Carraway’s narration, and worked to balance the romance between Gatsby and Daisy with the novel’s broader criticism of wealth and status.

The French Riviera is sometimes confused with the Italian Riviera because both were popular expatriate destinations. Fitzgerald did spend time in Italy, but the location associated with completing the 1924 rough draft was the French Riviera. Scribner published the finished novel in April 1925.
