Where are Georgia O'Keeffe's ashes scattered?

The story behind the answer

Georgia O'Keeffe's ashes were scattered over Cerro Pedernal. The flat-topped mountain in northern New Mexico was a recurring subject in her paintings and held deep personal meaning for her.

O'Keeffe first encountered the mountain during her long relationship with the New Mexico landscape. She painted Cerro Pedernal from different viewpoints, often reducing it to a strong horizontal form beneath a broad sky. Its distinctive profile made it one of the identifiable landmarks in her work.

After her death in Santa Fe in 1986, her ashes were scattered from the summit of Cerro Pedernal, fulfilling her connection to a place she had repeatedly represented. The mountain is near Abiquiu and is associated with the larger landscape around Ghost Ranch.

Ghost Ranch is a plausible mix-up because O'Keeffe lived and worked there, and many of her New Mexico paintings depict that area. Santa Fe is where she died, not where her ashes were scattered. Cerro Pedernal is the specific mountain named in accounts of her wishes and burial arrangements.
