When was Japan's surrender announced in the United States, marking U.S. V-J Day?

The story behind the answer

Japan's surrender was announced in the United States on August 14, 1945, marking the American V-J Day announcement.

The date differed across countries because the announcement was made on August 15 in Japan, where it was already the following day. Time-zone differences placed the news on August 14 in the United States and much of the Americas.

This announcement was not the same as the formal signing of Japan's surrender. The legal ceremony took place on September 2, 1945, aboard USS Missouri in Tokyo Bay. That distinction explains why V-J Day can refer to either the announcement date or the signing date, depending on national usage and historical context.
