When was Georgia O'Keeffe born?

The story behind the answer

Georgia O'Keeffe was born on November 15, 1887. She was born near Sun Prairie, Wisconsin, to Francis Calyxtus O'Keeffe and Ida Totto O'Keeffe, and was the second of seven children.

Her Wisconsin upbringing became an important part of her early identity, although her mature artistic reputation is strongly associated with New Mexico. O'Keeffe began drawing and painting as a child and received formal art instruction while still young.

The date is sometimes confused with the year she began studying at the Art Institute of Chicago or the year Alfred Stieglitz first exhibited her work. Those were much later milestones: she attended the Chicago institute in 1905, and Stieglitz showed her drawings in 1916.

O'Keeffe lived for nearly a century. Her long career included abstraction, flowers, architectural forms, and landscapes, making her one of the best-known American artists of the twentieth century.
