When did the album "Dark Side of the Moon" come out?

The story behind the answer

The album The Dark Side of the Moon came out in 1973.

Pink Floyd’s eighth studio album was released first in the United States on 1 March 1973 and in the United Kingdom on 16 March 1973. It had been developed through live performances before the band completed the studio recording, an unusual approach that helped the musicians refine the sequence and arrangements.

Recording took place at EMI Studios in London, now Abbey Road Studios, between May 1972 and February 1973. Engineer Alan Parsons helped shape its detailed sound, including tape loops, multitrack recording, synthesizers, and carefully layered vocal and instrumental effects.

The album explores pressure, time, greed, conflict, death, and mental illness. Its iconic cover, designed by Hipgnosis with artwork by George Hardie, shows white light passing through a prism. Listeners sometimes remember 1972 because the material was performed publicly that year, but the studio album itself was released in 1973. It became one of rock’s most commercially successful and enduring albums.
