When did Jimi Hendrix die?

The story behind the answer

Jimi Hendrix died on September 18, 1970. He died in London at the age of 27, shortly after being taken from the Samarkand Hotel in Notting Hill to St Mary Abbots Hospital.

Hendrix had spent the previous night with Monika Dannemann. She later reported finding him unconscious and unresponsive in the morning and calling an ambulance. The coroner determined that Hendrix died from asphyxia caused by inhalation of vomit, with barbiturate intoxication contributing to the death.

The exact details of his final hours have been debated because Dannemann was the only known witness to much of the night and morning. However, the date itself is firmly established. Hendrix’s death came only a few weeks after his appearance at the Isle of Wight Festival and while he was still developing music with drummer Mitch Mitchell and bassist Billy Cox.

His death helped cement his posthumous legend, but it also cut short a career that had lasted only a few years at the height of his fame.
