The Foo Fighters’ first album was released in 1995. The self-titled debut appeared on June 26, 1995, in the United Kingdom and on July 4, 1995, in the United States.
The album began as a private Dave Grohl project after Nirvana ended. Grohl wrote and recorded every song, playing the vocals, guitars, bass, and drums himself with producer Barrett Jones at Robert Lang Studios in Seattle during October 1994. He initially used the Foo Fighters name to keep his identity concealed.
Once the recordings attracted record-label interest, Grohl signed with Capitol Records, formed a touring band, and released the album through Roswell Records. The record introduced songs such as “This Is a Call,” “I’ll Stick Around,” “For All the Cows,” and “Big Me.”
A common mix-up is confusing the debut with The Colour and the Shape, which followed in 1997. The latter became the band’s major commercial breakthrough, but it was not their first album.
