What year was The Beatles formed?

The story behind the answer

The Beatles were formed in 1960, in Liverpool, England.

The group developed from John Lennon’s skiffle band, the Quarrymen, which he formed in 1956. Paul McCartney joined Lennon in 1957, and George Harrison followed in 1958. The band went through several names and line-ups before becoming the Beatles and beginning their crucial early performances in Liverpool and Hamburg.

The year 1960 is generally used for the Beatles’ formation because that was when the group adopted the Beatles name and began working as a professional performing band. Their line-up was not yet the familiar final quartet: drummer Pete Best joined that year, while Ringo Starr did not become a member until 1962.

Another common source of confusion is the distinction between formation and breakthrough. The Beatles’ first British hit, “Love Me Do,” arrived in 1962, and Beatlemania became an international phenomenon in 1963 and 1964. Those later dates mark commercial success, not the band’s creation.

The Beatles remained active until 1970 and became one of the most influential groups in popular music, shaping songwriting, recording techniques and the culture of the 1960s.
