The Beatles' album Rubber Soul was released in 1965.
EMI's Parlophone label released Rubber Soul in the United Kingdom on December 3, 1965. It was the Beatles' sixth studio album and marked a major artistic step forward, with more mature songwriting and a stronger focus on the album as a unified work rather than merely a collection of singles.
The recording sessions took place in London from October 12 to November 11, 1965, and were completed under a tight Christmas-release schedule. The album drew on folk rock, soul, and pop influences, including sounds the Beatles had encountered during their 1965 American tour. New textures included sitar, harmonium, and fuzz bass.
The year can seem confusing because the album's release dates varied by market and its US edition had a different track listing. Capitol Records issued the North American version in December 1965, while omitting four songs that later appeared elsewhere. The album followed Help! and preceded Revolver, which arrived in 1966. Its title was a playful reference to the phrase “plastic soul.”
