Metallica released the documentary A Year and a Half in the Life of Metallica in 1992.
The two-part video documents the making of Metallica, commonly called The Black Album, and the touring that followed. It was released on November 17, 1992, as a double VHS package, with the two parts later available together on DVD in some markets.
Part one focuses on the recording process, including the band’s tense working relationship with producer Bob Rock and the production of several music videos. Part two follows Metallica on tour, including performances connected with the Wherever We May Roam Tour and the Guns N’ Roses/Metallica Stadium Tour.
The documentary is sometimes remembered as a concert film, but its first half is substantially a studio-making-of account. Its title refers to the extended period surrounding the album’s creation and touring rather than to a separate studio album.
