The novel follows Fanny Price, who is sent from her financially struggling Portsmouth family to live with wealthy relatives at the Mansfield Park estate. Its concerns include education, morality, social rank, family duty, theatrical performance, and the economics of the landed gentry. The first edition sold out within six months, and a second edition followed in 1816, published by John Murray.
