What year was Fight Club released?

The story behind the answer

Fight Club was released in 1999.

David Fincher’s film premiered at the 56th Venice International Film Festival on September 10, 1999, before its United States theatrical release on October 15 of the same year. It was adapted from Chuck Palahniuk’s 1996 novel by screenwriter Jim Uhls and stars Edward Norton, Brad Pitt, and Helena Bonham Carter.

The film arrived near the end of a decade marked by growing interest in psychologically darker, more provocative mainstream cinema. Its story of an insomniac office worker, Tyler Durden, and an underground fighting organization challenged consumer culture and conventional ideas about masculinity.

Fight Club was not an immediate box-office phenomenon and initially divided critics, but its reputation grew substantially after home-video release. It later became one of the most discussed films of the 1990s, especially for its narration, visual style, twist ending, and themes of identity. It is sometimes confused with later films influenced by its aesthetic, but the original Fincher film belongs specifically to 1999.
