The United States Bicentennial was celebrated in 1976.
The Bicentennial marked 200 years since the Declaration of Independence was adopted in 1776. Celebrations took place nationwide, with parades, fireworks, exhibitions, educational programs, concerts, and community events organized throughout the year.
Philadelphia played a major role because the Declaration was adopted there. Boston, New York, Washington, and many other cities also held large commemorations. The national program included historic preservation projects and special cultural events designed to connect the Revolutionary era with contemporary American life.
The Bicentennial also generated lasting physical reminders, including the American Freedom Train, which toured the country carrying historic objects. America250 follows this tradition on a larger anniversary cycle: the 2026 celebration marks 250 years rather than 200.
