Billy Joel was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1999. The ceremony took place in Cleveland, the institution's home, and Ray Charles inducted Joel, one of his major musical influences.
Joel's induction recognized a highly successful solo career built around piano-driven rock, sophisticated songwriting, and albums such as The Stranger, 52nd Street, and Glass Houses. He became eligible after years of influential recordings and was inducted in his first year of eligibility.
The year is sometimes confused with other honors. Joel entered the Songwriters Hall of Fame in 1992, received the MusiCares Person of the Year award in 2002, and joined the Long Island Music Hall of Fame in 2006. Those are separate achievements from his Rock Hall induction.
Joel later returned to the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame stage as an inducting presenter, including ceremonies for The Righteous Brothers and John Mellencamp.
