What year did the Rochdale Society of Equitable Pioneers begin operating in England?

The story behind the answer

The Rochdale Society of Equitable Pioneers began operating in England in 1844.

Twenty-eight workers in Rochdale, Lancashire, opened a cooperative store on December 21, 1844. They pooled small contributions to buy basic goods, including flour, oatmeal, sugar, and butter, at fair prices. Members also shared in the surplus according to their purchases.

The Rochdale model became influential because it formalized principles such as open membership, democratic control, member economic participation, and education. Later cooperatives around the world drew on these ideas, although modern cooperatives often adapt the principles to their own sectors and legal systems.

The Rochdale Pioneers did not invent every form of cooperation, but their organization is widely treated as a foundation of the modern cooperative movement. Their store is therefore an important example of local residents using collective ownership to improve access to goods and strengthen a community economy.
