What year did the New York punk club CBGB open?

The New York punk club CBGB opened in 1973.

Hilly Kristal opened CBGB on December 10, 1973, at 315 Bowery in Manhattan’s East Village. The club’s full name was CBGB & OMFUG, short for “Country, BlueGrass, Blues and Other Music For Uplifting Gormandizers.” Kristal initially intended to feature those roots-oriented genres, but the venue soon became famous for presenting experimental and emerging rock bands.

Television began a regular residency there in 1974, and acts including Patti Smith, the Ramones, Blondie, and Talking Heads played important early shows at the club. CBGB’s small stage and rough atmosphere made it a central meeting point for New York’s developing punk and art-rock communities.

CBGB closed on October 15, 2006, after a dispute involving the club’s lease. The venue’s opening date is sometimes confused with the date when punk became widely recognized as a genre. CBGB existed before the 1976–77 explosion, helping create the local network that made that period possible.
