What year did The Four Tops sign with Motown?

The story behind the answer

The Four Tops signed with Motown in 1963. The Detroit vocal quartet—Levi Stubbs, Abdul “Duke” Fakir, Renaldo “Obie” Benson, and Lawrence Payton—had already been performing together for years under names including the Four Aims and the Four Tops before joining Berry Gordy’s label.

Motown initially used the group for background vocals and recordings while developing its sound. Their major breakthrough came in 1964 with “Baby I Need Your Loving,” written and produced by Holland–Dozier–Holland. The song became the group’s first major hit and established Stubbs’s powerful lead voice.

The Four Tops became one of Motown’s most successful groups, scoring later hits such as “I Can’t Help Myself (Sugar Pie, Honey Bunch),” “Reach Out I’ll Be There,” and “Bernadette.” A common mix-up is confusing their signing year with their breakthrough year: they joined Motown in 1963, but their best-known run of hit singles began the following year.
