What year did the 100 Club Punk Festival take place?

The story behind the answer

The 100 Club Punk Festival took place in 1976.

More commonly called the 100 Club Punk Special, it was a two-day event held on 20 and 21 September 1976 at the 100 Club on Oxford Street in London. Promoter Ron Watts worked with Sex Pistols manager Malcolm McLaren to assemble a bill that captured the rapidly developing British punk scene.

The first night featured Subway Sect, Siouxsie and the Banshees, the Clash, and the Sex Pistols. The second night included the French band Stinky Toys, Chris Spedding and the Vibrators, the Damned, and the Buzzcocks. Several performers were still unsigned, and some sets were improvised or barely rehearsed.

The festival is remembered as a watershed moment because it brought different strands of the underground punk movement together in a small, jazz-oriented venue. Its capacity was only about 600, helping explain why later claims about having attended became difficult to verify. The event predates punk's major commercial breakthrough and is often treated as a key point in the genre's emergence.
