What year did Salvador Dalí die?

The story behind the answer

Salvador Dalí died in 1989.

Dalí died on 23 January 1989 in his hometown of Figueres, Spain, at the age of 84. He had spent his final years increasingly withdrawn from public life after serious health problems, including a debilitating movement disorder. His death marked the end of a career that had made him one of the most recognizable figures in twentieth-century Surrealism.

Dalí was born in 1904, so he lived through major artistic and political changes: the rise of European avant-garde movements, the Spanish Civil War, the Second World War, and the expansion of mass media and celebrity culture. His work ranged beyond painting into sculpture, film, photography, fashion, jewellery, writing, and stage design.

He was buried in a crypt below the stage of the Dalí Theatre and Museum in Figueres. The building had begun as the town theatre where Dalí exhibited as a young artist and was later rebuilt as a museum dedicated to him. The date is sometimes confused with 1982, the year his wife and muse Gala died.
