Nike launched the Nike Free running shoe line in 2004.
The original Nike Free 5.0 emerged from Nike’s interest in barefoot training. Designers observed Nike-sponsored track athletes exercising without shoes and investigated how barefoot movement affected the foot. The resulting shoe aimed to provide a more natural-feeling alternative to conventional, heavily structured running footwear.
Its defining feature was a flexible outsole cut with numerous deep grooves. Those grooves allowed the shoe to bend more readily with the foot, while the 5.0 designation represented a position on Nike’s “Free” scale: lower numbers were intended to feel closer to barefoot, while higher numbers offered more cushioning and structure.
Some references list 2005 because that was the introduction date for certain markets or because the first broad commercial release is described that way. Nike’s own historical materials and product retrospectives identify 2004 as the debut of the original Free 5.0, making 2004 the best answer to this quiz’s launch-year wording. Later models included the Free 3.0, Free 7.0, and Free Run+ series.
