MTV launched MTV2 as a second U.S. music-television channel in 1996.
The channel was created during a period when MTV’s main service was increasingly adding reality shows, news, interviews, and other non-video programming. MTV2 was intended to provide a more concentrated home for music videos, especially alternative, rock, hip-hop, and other formats that received less room on the flagship channel.
MTV2 began as M2 and was later renamed MTV2. Its early identity emphasized continuous music programming and a broader range of artists than viewers associated with mainstream MTV. The channel therefore became part of the wider debate about MTV’s changing role in music culture.
The launch is sometimes confused with MTV’s international expansion or with MTV’s later digital-era channels. MTV Europe began in 1987, while MTV2 was a separate U.S. service launched nine years later. Over time, MTV2 also added original shows and changed its programming mix.
