What year did Karl Lagerfeld join Chanel?
Answer
1983
Answer
1983
Karl Lagerfeld joined Chanel in 1983. He was hired to lead the house’s couture and creative direction at a time when the label needed a fresh approach after Coco Chanel’s death.
Before arriving at Chanel, Lagerfeld had built a wide-ranging career at major fashion houses. He worked at Balmain and Jean Patou, became associated with Chloé, and had already been serving as creative director of Fendi since 1965. That experience helped him balance Chanel’s established codes with more contemporary fashion.
At Chanel, Lagerfeld retained elements such as tweed, chains, gold detailing and the double-C emblem, but pushed them into bolder silhouettes and highly visible collections. He also expanded the brand’s global reach; during the 1980s, more than 40 Chanel boutiques opened worldwide. Lagerfeld remained Chanel’s creative director until his death in 2019.
