Georgia O'Keeffe painted Jimson Weed/White Flower No. 1 in 1932.
The painting presents a large white jimson weed flower against a dark background. O'Keeffe frequently enlarged flowers so that their forms filled the canvas, encouraging viewers to study details that might otherwise be overlooked. The work is one of the clearest examples of her use of close-up scale and simplified organic structure.
The painting remained in the collection of the philanthropist David H. Koch until it was sold at auction in 2014. It achieved a record price for a painting by a female artist at that time, drawing renewed attention to O'Keeffe's importance in American modernism.
Jimson weed is also known as Datura, a plant with trumpet-shaped flowers. The title is sometimes shortened in casual references, but the full title is Jimson Weed/White Flower No. 1. It should not be confused with O'Keeffe's later paintings of other flowers or with her black iris series.
