George Harrison released his first solo album in 1968. Titled Wonderwall Music, it was released in November as the soundtrack to the film Wonderwall, directed by Joe Massot.
The album was a landmark in Beatles history: it was the first solo album released by any member of the Beatles and the first album issued by Apple Records. Harrison produced the project and blended Western rock, experimental sounds, and Indian classical music, reflecting his growing interest in Indian instruments and composition.
Wonderwall Music is sometimes overlooked because it is largely instrumental and came out while the Beatles were still together. It is also sometimes confused with All Things Must Pass, Harrison’s first major post-Beatles solo album, released in 1970. His next solo release, Electronic Sound, followed in 1969 and was an experimental album built around synthesizer pieces.
