The Deutsche Mark became East Germany's official currency when the Monetary, Economic and Social Union took effect on 1 July 1990. The agreement had been signed by East and West Germany on 18 May, linking the two economies months before political reunification on 3 October.

The currency carried enormous symbolic weight. Many East Germans regarded the West German mark as a sign of stability and prosperity, and demands for rapid economic union grew during the demonstrations and political upheaval following the Wall's opening. The change replaced the Mark der DDR, commonly called the East German mark.

Conversion was not governed by one universal rate. Wages, prices and certain savings were generally converted at 1:1 within limits, while larger savings and some liabilities received less favorable rates, often 2:1 or 3:1. The Deutsche Mark remained Germany's currency until the euro replaced it for cash in 2002.
