What was Thomas Edison’s first job in the railroad industry?

The story behind the answer

Thomas Edison’s first railroad job was as a newsboy. As a boy, he sold newspapers, candy, and other items to passengers on the Grand Trunk Railway route between Port Huron and Detroit.

Edison also obtained permission to use a baggage car as a small laboratory and printing space. There he experimented with chemistry and produced a newspaper called the Grand Trunk Herald. A fire caused by one of his experiments reportedly ended his access to the baggage car.

Edison later worked as a telegraph operator, a role that connected him with the electrical and communications technologies of the era. His experience with telegraphy strongly influenced several early inventions and helped him find technical employment.

People sometimes describe Edison’s first railroad position as a telegraph operator because that became an important early occupation. Chronologically, however, he began on the railroad as a newsboy before moving into telegraph work.
