What was the total revenue of all Fortune 500 companies in 2023?

All Fortune 500 companies generated about $18.1 trillion in total revenue in 2023.

That figure came from the 2023 Fortune 500, whose companies’ financial results primarily covered fiscal years ending in 2022. It represented a record total at the time and exceeded the previous year’s combined revenue of about $16.1 trillion. The aggregate was larger than the annual economic output of many countries, illustrating the immense scale of the companies included.

The Fortune 500 is not a list of the 500 largest companies in the world. It covers U.S.-incorporated companies, including public and private businesses, ranked by revenue. That distinction explains why some globally familiar firms appear while foreign-headquartered corporations do not.

Revenue is also not profit. The companies collectively earned about $1.56 trillion in profit for the period, substantially less than their sales total. Revenue measures money brought in; profit is what remains after expenses, interest, taxes, and other costs.
