Willie Nelson’s 1978 album that included “Blue Skies” was Stardust.
The album consists largely of American popular standards rather than newly written contemporary country songs. Nelson recorded songs associated with composers such as Hoagy Carmichael, George Gershwin, Irving Berlin, and Duke Ellington. His relaxed phrasing and sparse country arrangement gave the older material a distinctive identity.
“Blue Skies,” written by Irving Berlin, became one of the album’s best-known tracks. Stardust was a commercial and critical success, eventually earning multi-platinum certification and remaining one of Nelson’s defining recordings.
The album is frequently confused with Red Headed Stranger, Nelson’s 1975 concept album, or Always on My Mind, his 1982 release. Honeysuckle Rose is primarily associated with the 1980 film and soundtrack. Stardust stands apart because it presented Nelson as an interpreter of the Great American Songbook while retaining his unmistakable country vocal style.
