What was the title of the first hip-hop album to win the Grammy Award for Album of the Year?

The story behind the answer

"The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill" was the first hip-hop album to win the Grammy Award for Album of the Year.

Lauryn Hill won the award at the 41st Annual Grammy Awards in 1999. The album, released in 1998, combines hip hop with soul, R&B, reggae, and spoken interludes. It was her first solo studio album after her highly successful period with the Fugees.

The record produced major singles including "Doo Wop (That Thing)," "Ex-Factor," and "Everything Is Everything." Its themes include love, independence, motherhood, spirituality, and the pressures of fame. Hill wrote and performed much of the material and received extensive production support from a large credited team.

Later hip-hop albums also won Album of the Year, including OutKast's "Speakerboxxx/The Love Below" in 2004. That later achievement is a common source of confusion, but Hill's 1999 victory came first.
