What was the title of George Lucas's first feature film?
Answer
THX 1138
Answer
THX 1138
George Lucas’s first feature film was THX 1138.
Released in 1971, THX 1138 was Lucas’s feature directorial debut. He expanded it from his 1967 USC student short, Electronic Labyrinth: THX 1138 4EB. The feature was produced by Francis Ford Coppola and co-written with Walter Murch.
The film is a stark social-science-fiction story set in a dystopian future where citizens are controlled by drugs, surveillance, and android police. Robert Duvall plays the title character, a worker who begins resisting the system. Its minimalist look and industrial settings reflected Lucas’s experimental filmmaking background.
THX 1138 was not a commercial hit on release, which makes it easy to confuse Lucas’s first feature with American Graffiti or Star Wars. Those later films brought him mainstream success, while THX 1138 established his career as an ambitious filmmaker. A restored director’s cut was released in 2004.
