What was the title of C.S. Lewis’s 1950 novel about the Pevensie children entering another world?

The story behind the answer

The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe is C.S. Lewis’s 1950 novel about the Pevensie children entering another world.

The story follows Peter, Susan, Edmund, and Lucy Pevensie, who discover the land of Narnia through a wardrobe. Narnia is trapped in a winter imposed by the White Witch, and the children become involved in a conflict linked to Aslan, the great lion. The novel introduces the setting and several characters that recur across The Chronicles of Narnia.

Although it is often read first, the book was published second in the series’ internal chronology. The first published Narnia book was The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe in 1950, while The Magician’s Nephew was published later, in 1955, as a prequel. Editions and reading guides therefore sometimes differ over numbering.

The novel’s title is also frequently shortened in casual conversation, but the canonical title includes all three nouns. Its mixture of fairy-tale motifs, Christian symbolism, talking animals, and adventure made it Lewis’s most widely recognized children’s fantasy novel.
