Answer
The Screwtape Letters
C.S. Lewis’s 1942 novel about correspondence between a demon and his nephew is The Screwtape Letters.
The book presents a series of letters from Screwtape, an experienced demon, to his inexperienced nephew Wormwood. Screwtape offers advice on tempting a human being, whom the demons call “the Patient.” Lewis creates an ironic perspective by describing moral and spiritual failure from the viewpoint of Hell.
The letters were first published in the Anglican newspaper The Guardian in 1941 and appeared as a book in 1942. The format allowed Lewis to examine everyday temptations such as distraction, vanity, resentment, and self-deception without writing a conventional narrative.
Although the book uses satire and fictional demonic correspondence, it is not a manual of occult practice. Its purpose is moral and theological reflection. The name Screwtape is sometimes remembered as the title, but the complete book title is The Screwtape Letters.
