The story behind the answer

Out of the Silent Planet is C.S. Lewis’s 1938 novel about a human journey to Mars.

The book follows Dr. Elwin Ransom, a philologist who is abducted and taken to the planet Mars, called Malacandra in the story. There he encounters intelligent species and learns that Earth is regarded as spiritually damaged and isolated.

Out of the Silent Planet is the first volume of Lewis’s Space Trilogy. It is followed by Perelandra and That Hideous Strength.
