Beyoncé’s 2016 visual album about identity, history, and marriage was Lemonade.
Parkwood Entertainment and Columbia Records released Lemonade on April 23, 2016, after an HBO premiere of its accompanying film. The project combines songs, poetry, spoken narration, and imagery connected to Black womanhood, family, cultural memory, and personal conflict.
Lemonade includes “Formation,” “Sorry,” “Hold Up,” and “Freedom.” It debuted at number one on the Billboard 200 and became one of the most critically acclaimed albums of the 2010s.
The album’s title is linked to a passage about making lemonade from lemons, associated with Beyoncé’s grandmother and Jay-Z’s grandmother. It is distinct from Everything Is Love, her 2018 collaborative album with Jay-Z.
